Auburn wide receiver JaâVarrius Johnson reportedly to enter transfer portal
After a second consecutive season of being Auburn’s leader wide receiver for receiving yards, Ja’Varrius Johnson will reportedly enter the transfer portal Friday, according to 247Sports.
The Hewitt-Trussville product totaled over 1,110 receiving yards over 34 games in the last three seasons.
He is the most productive Auburn player to enter the portal as a leader in the wide receiver room over his four years on campus.
But despite leading all Auburn wide receivers in yards the past two years, he was never able to develop into the go-to wide receiver Auburn needed Johnson has a stellar Iron Bowl to close the 2023 regular season in the closest any Auburn receiver looked to a No. 1 receiver all season.
Auburn has other options at the slot receiver position for the future including Caleb Burton entering his second year with Auburn after transferring last offseason from Ohio State. Auburn also brought in highly-rated transfer Robert Lewis from Georgia State.
Johnson is the fourth Auburn receiver in the transfer portal after Jyaire Shorter, Omari Kelly and Malcolm Johnson Jr. He is the second big Auburn name to enter the portal after Robby Ashford put his name in on Friday morning.
Auburn’s wide receiver room is now down to four returning players: Koy Moore, Jay Fair, Camden Brown and Burton. Auburn will only seven scholarship wide receivers on its roster for the upcoming Music City Bowl on Dec. 30, and only two of those seven had double-digit catches this season.
Auburn is expected to bring in its highest-rated class of freshman receivers in program history with five-star recruits Cam Coleman and Perry Thompson as well as four-star commits Malcolm Simmons and Bryce Cain.
It is a total revamp and reset of a wide receiver room that struggled mightily in 2024.
